Duckbill platypus penis

The echidna is an odd animal for many reasons. Additionally, the females of this mamalian species lay eggs, which is really rare — in fact, the only other mammal known to do this is the platypus egg-laying mammals are called monotremes , so already we can see that these are special ickly cuties. But what is perhaps most bizarre about this little Australian waddler is its penis. Dare you look? I think it looks like the foot of a baby rhino or something.

A double headed penis and a highly venomous spur. What you should probably know about the platypus

I wrote about the echidna in an earlier post and thought it only fair to write one for that other equally odd Australian monotreme — the platypus. While not physically very similar looking, functionally they are. Both lay eggs, both have a single opening for all their waste stuff and sex stuff, both walk like reptiles as explained in my echidna post , and both have multi-headed penises…. As you can see above, the platypus penis is quite specialised!

The platypus represents one of the most peculiar living mammals. And beyond peculiarity, it is really the most primitive living mammal, together with its relatives, the echidnas, forming the group Monotrema "one orifice", as they have only the cloaca. They have many traits still common to reptiles, but not found in mammals, like a cloaca or a third bone in the shoulder girdle, the coracoid which in the other mammals is fused with the shoulder blade.
